In the spring of 2013, the face we’d been waiting to see for eight years of “How I Met Your Mother” finally graced our TV screens: the mother. After seeing her buying her train ticket to Farhampton, the Internet quickly exploded with every imaginable feeling, from surprise to joy to anger. While some fans loved the unexpected way we met her, others claimed that she was “a not-so-pretty version of Robin.” We all had so many opinions and so many questions. Thankfully, the show’s creators, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, soon took the time to explain a few key details.
We learned that they’d picked actress Cristin Milioti for the role because they thought she was charming and hilarious, and also because she is a fairly unfamiliar face, so that the audience wouldn’t have any previous feelings about her. We also learned that the entire ninth season would take place on the weekend of Barney and Robin’s wedding, and in classic HIMYM style, would have tons of flash-forwards and flashbacks in between. The writers also revealed that Lily, Marshall, Barney and Robin would all meet the mother before Ted did.
There were plenty of reactions to this news as well, but personally, I think the writers were smart in taking on these challenges. Back when the original plan was to have Ted meet the mother on the very last episode of the show, I felt like it was the easy way out: have them meet and you’re done, you reached the promise made on the show’s title. But now, I’m really excited to get to know this character, who has to be more awesome than all of Ted’s previous girlfriends combined.
For starters, she can’t be a slob like Victoria, a pretentious wine-name-dropper like Karen, still in love with her ex like Stella, or just plain annoying like Zoey, whose only good trait was being married to the Captain. So far, we know that the still-nameless mother is musically talented and has a thing for bright-colored umbrellas, but I have my own wish list. If she wants us to truly believe that she deserves to be Mrs. Theodore Evelyn Mosby, this woman has to be a smart, hilarious hopeless romantic who appreciates a pair of good red cowboy boots when she sees them.
Pulling them off!
We’re less than two weeks away from the season premiere, and there are so many things to look forward to, from a Robin Sparkles appearance to the resolution to as many loose ends as they had on “Lost” (The goat! The slaps!) In the meantime, click here to enjoy a new preview of Lily meeting the mother for the first time.
