Who cares? Though we might recognize one, Beck Bennet, from AT&T commercials, where most of the memorable lines come from kids, and a web series or two (Mike O’Brien and Noel Wells), the announcement (despite being made in The New York Times) was easily brushed aside. (Meet the new cast members here the full list is: Beck Bennett, John Milhiser, Kyle Mooney, Mike O’Brien, Noel Wells and Brooks Wheelan.)
The new cast members are just so vanilla. And I mean that in an almost literal sense: they’re all white, five of them are male and one is female. So does SNL have a dearth of diversity and a surplus of white males? Yeah. Does that cater to its viewing demographic? Probably. But most importantly does it matter anymore? With a wealth of other TV and internet comedy, is SNL still as culturally relevant?
Time, this new season’s writing, and the quality of these new cast members will answer that question.
